From Robert Clark
Yorkshire Branch Members recently met on the premises of Shaw and Lisle Catering in Huddersfield. The company produces some 20,000 sandwiches each day, which is quite an undertaking. We were met on arrival by Richard Lisle, Sales Director, who gave us a brief history of the company, its product range, place in the market, and view of the future.
After ‘togging up’ with coats, overshoes and hairnets we were shown around the production unit. The first thing that stood out was the large number of staff required to man each production line. It was explained that a run of plain cheese sandwiches was underway but the next run could consist of many more ingredients, all requiring somebody to put them in.
We often take for granted items and services we use in our day-to-day and business lives, such as prepared sandwiches, and never appreciate what is involved in their production. Visits like this help us to understand the complexities of production processes, and hopefully it makes us more tolerant when occasionally things don’t go as well as we would like.
The factory tour was followed by our Branch meeting and an excellent buffet which included products from Shaw and Lisle’s extensive range. A generous gift of samples (always welcome!) was provided for our separate journeys home.
