Patient Safety WeekPatient Safety Week

15th to 21st of November 2010

Following the success of Patient Safety First week that took place in September 2009, the NPSA is holding Patient Safety Week from the 15th to 21st of November 2010.

During the week we encourage you to take the opportunity to raise awareness locally about you and your organisation’s commitment to patient safety and to share your stories and good practice.

The Patient Safety Week web pageis now live, we recommend you bookmark this page and check back regularly as we will update it with more resources. It will also be the place you will find out news on what is taking place around the country during the week itself.

Take one step

We are developing a variety of ‘Take one step’ activities for individuals and teams to take part in during the week. These activities are similar in principle to activities from last year, and are ideas designed to involve minimal preparation.  These tools will be available for download from the Patient Safety Week web page <http://www.patientsafetyfirst.nhs.uk/Content.aspx?path=/Campaign-support/patient-safety-week-2010/> over the coming days.

Evidence shows that taking even very small steps to change practice can make a really big difference. Making changes that have been tried and tested on a small scale (for instance on one ward, or on one day) means that they are much more likely to spread and in a way that can be sustained over time.

‘Take one step’ for pressure ulcer prevention is SCREEN IT OUT by ensuring that nutritional assessments have been completed.

WebEx sessions

On the run up to and during Patient Safety Week we will be running several interactive online WebEx sessions on a variety of patient safety topics.

There will be opportunities for discussion and sharing and will be hosted by experts including:

  • Dr Suzette Woodward - Director of Patient Safety, NPSA
  • Dr Maxine Power - National Improvement Advisor, Dept of Health
  • Cathy Warwick - General Secretary, Royal College of Midwives.
