Wales & Merseyside HCA branches join forces to merge

After a year of positive discussions and close collaboration, the merger of the Merseyside & North Wales and Wales branches of the Hospital Caterers Association (HCA) has been confirmed.
This decision was formally confirmed during the national annual general meeting held on Friday 25th April 2025 and marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for members across the region.
To create the new branch, ‘Bye Law 34: Withdrawal of Recognition of a Branch’ was put into effect with the Wales and Merseyside & North Wales branches being formally disbanded and ‘Bye Law 35: Creating a New Branch’ was enacted to form the new branch.
Over the past couple of years, the two branches have been holding joint meetings in response to challenges many of the regions face—particularly around filling officer roles and low meeting attendance.
During that time, they’ve built a strong partnership and it became clear that they could serve members more effectively as one united branch.
This merger allows them to streamline activities, strengthen the network and create new opportunities for collaboration and support. The new management team includes:
- Chair Adam Johnson: He has held Branch Officer roles with the Merseyside & North Wales Branch—serving two years as Secretary and currently in his second year as Chair.
- Secretary Rachel Johnson: She brings over three decades of experience in the foodservice industry, having started her career as a full-time chef before moving into senior sales roles with three of the UK’s major foodservice wholesalers.
- Treasurer Alice Reed: She has been a qualified dietitian for 19 years and worked all her career within NHS Wales. Alice advocates a strong food first ethos for patients and has worked closely with catering in many roles.
- Board Director David Wismann: He has previously been Branch Secretary, Branch Treasurer, acting Branch Chaiman & Board Director for the old Wales Branch.
Chair Adam Johnson commented: “This merger marks the start of a more connected, active and sustainable future for our branch. Whether you were part of the former Wales or Merseyside & North Wales branch—or are just joining us—we encourage you to get involved. Attend a meeting, join a discussion, or simply reach out. This is your branch, and we’re here to support you. Here’s to a stronger, united future.”
